Is Your Project Research?
1. Does your project involve people or Protected Health Information (PHI)?
2. Does your project have a systematic framework?
3. Will your project results be used outside of Adventist HealthCare?
If you answered "Yes" to these 3 questions, your project requires Adventist HealthCare Institutional Review Board (AHC IRB) review. The AHC IRB is charged with protecting the rights and welfare of human subjects recruited to participate in research activities at AHC facilities.
AHC requires that all research studies involving humans as subjects, human biological material or identifiable protected health information be reviewed and approved by the IRB prior to initiation of any research-related activities, including recruitment and screening activities.
The IRB is responsible for ensuring that the rights and welfare of research subjects are protected by reviewing and approving human research in a manner consistent with federal regulations, state and local laws, and institutional guidelines and policies
Please contact the IRB Office at (301) 315-3400 or IRB@AdventistHealthCare.com for next steps.
Pre-IRB Review: Research Operations Evaluation Requirement
All research studies must undergo a Research Operations Evaluation (ROE) by Entity Leadership of each AHC study site prior to IRB review. The purpose of the ROE is to determine whether the AHC entity can operationally and economically support the research study. The AHC IRB will require written acknowledgement of ROE approval in order to begin the IRB review process.
